Substanz ohne Form

This book is devoted to an in-depth examination of Primitivism, a prominent school of thought (predominantly in the fields of art and philosophy) in late 19th and early 20th century Europe.

The movement was principally driven by the study of artefacts and/or artwork classified as the “primal forms of artistic expression” believed to be found among indigenous peoples/tribal communities in Africa, the Pacific region and the Americas.

Set against this backdrop, this book reveals a pervasive Eurocentric understanding of foreign, non-Western cultures, dominated by romantically idealised, distorted conceptions and racially charged stereotypes, which continue to resonate in the present day.
